The Classic
Sometimes affectionately referred to as "M+Ms with obstacles", this is the same stuff that can be bought in trail mix bags at the grocery store, except with personal control over quantities and quality.
- M+Ms. The original calls for just plain, but try different types and flavors!
- Roasted and salted peanuts, no shells. Spanish peanuts if you can find them.
- Raisins
- Sunflower seeds, roasted and salted, no shells.
- Almonds, whole and marketed as snacks. The smokehouse ones are best, but plain salted will do.
S'mores Bites
for when you just need that campfire classic, but also setting things on fire is disallowed or inconvenient.
- mini marshmallows
- Golden Grahams cereal (or Captain Crunch, or Cinnamon Toast Crunch to be fancy)
- chocolate chips
Hogswatch Fruitcake Mix
Just calling it that means that no one is ever going to try it.... but it's good. I promise. All the fruit and none of the cake. If you're feeling fancy and not trying to eat this mix with hands, dump a bit of molasses on top. If you're feeling really fancy and are of an appropriate age, soak the fruit in rum for a bit first.
- Dried cherries
- Dried apricots
- Golden raisins
- Dates (consider slicing these in half)
- Walnut pieces
- Pecan pieces
- Almond slices
- Granola of your favorite type! Blueberry is great, chocolate is okay.
Trick or Treat Mix
all the delights of a well-stocked Halloween goodie bag! Back when I worked in the bakery, I would make buckets of this stuff and dump it on anything (with frosting) that stood still long enough. Big hit with the kids, very colorful.
- mini oreos
- candy corn
- mini reece's cups, the un-wrapped kind in a bag.
- M+Ms, any kind.
- mini pretzel twists (or big ones broken up a little)
- Sprinkles! Big crunchy ones are best, especially seasonally appropriate colors.
