Putting it All Together

Ta-da! You've learned some new tools. Now put them to use! Here are a few things that should be easily possible after studying this guide and learning the tips and tools in it.

Home from the Highway

Be able to write down, on a piece of paper using a pen and no references, the route home from the nearest interstate exit, including what that interstate is. Road numbers or names, turn directions, useful landmarks.

Visiting a Friend

Plan a route and go visit a friend! Bonus points if you can trade for their own version of Home from the Highway to work with.

Wandering

After deciding on some Boundary Highways, leave home and go looking for somewhere interesting, without a map, inside those boundary highways. Could be a fishing spot, something to eat, or a cool building. You don't have to know ahead of time! Just go out, find something cool, and then get home again after.

Navigating Wild

Get on the interstate to leave the usual boundary highways, and go find a rest stop or welcome center (or a hotel or big gas station, in a pinch). Pick a brochure that looks interesting. Most of them have directions and/or a map in the back. Navigate using only the brochure and a local highway map (which should also be available at the rest stop), to that point of interest, and then home again.

Home from Adventures

This works best with a buddy. After a long adventure out of state and/or lasting several days, don't bother with the map to get back home. Just get back on the highway using your best skills, and get back to known territory. Practicing calmly makes it easier when things aren't going so well.
